Pointless Video Blogging - Lazy bloggers or Vanity
January 10, 2008
There is a growing list of video blogs from many by well respected 'technologists'. As I am a q-list blogger, I won't bother linking to them as I do not want to be accused of using this story as link bait. However, I hate (or rather I am extremely irritated by) more than 95% of video blogs I watch and am now actively avoiding them.
I'm assuming laziness rather than vanity is the reason why a growing list of established bloggers are now talking into cameras.
Steve Rubel recently coined the lazysphere as bloggers who "Rather than create new ideas or pen thoughtful essays, they simply glom on to the latest news with another "me too" blog post."
To this definition I will add bloggers who would rather talk in a free-flow-lightly-structured manner into a video camera about some idea, rather than take the time to articulate their thoughts and write them down in a cohesive well structured manner."
Let me ask you, what benefit am I getting from seeing your face talk?
If what you are saying is so important to HEAR, why not make it a damn podcast and save the video bandwidth?
Is it really important for me to see your face on this particular topic? Then take a bloody picture!
Here are some of the damn problems I have with your video blog.
I'm on an old G4 Mac laptop (hope that changes next week) and your video is hogging my processor.
I can't access the blog on my cell phone - and if I could I would refuse to pay the bandwidth.
I cannot cut and paste poignant things you might say for my reference.
Most video blogs are progressive download. If the "vodcast" or whatever you like to call it is 50 minutes long and I only have a few minute chunks of time to watch, it's a fricken pain in the ass to keep coming back to download wait for it to load my section the watch again.
And the biggest reason is:
I can read 20 times faster than you can talk! You are wasting my and everyone else's time with your 50 minute Video Blog, because you are too lazy to write it down.
I know you can write, I've seen you do it!
Hey I'm not against Video. But if you are going to use it - THEN USE IT. Show me something that enhances your presentation! Don't show me your face.
