FreeMusicZilla: It may be good software but it's purpose smells bad.

January 2, 2008

I read about FreeMuzicZilla on techcrunch this morning, and I've been thinking of it since. I am fully supportive of play the web applications. However, after some thought I'm not keen on this tool. It feels wrong. I'm trying to work it out in my head.

First I hate the fact that they are putting the "Zilla" in their name. It feels like a feeble and dishonest attempt to connect it to the highly reputable open source project: Mozilla.

Those who know me, know that I am fervently against "legislated" device-based-DRM. However, I believe copyright holders have the right to sell/share their music with a device based-DRM license (like iTunes) if they like, even if it is misguided in my opinion. For clarity device restrictions that do not interfere with established fair use, which iTunes doesn't in my opinion - it just makes it unnecessarily more difficult via the CD burn function.

However, when a file is offered as STREAM only. The intent by the copyright owner is for US to listen and NOT to download. You may agree or disagree with that "business model", but it is not our choice to make. There are tons of sites that offer legal and free downloads and podcasts of music - but that is the creator's choice to do so. Unlike P2P technologies, I'm not sure Music Zilla has any redeeming factor other than to break the law. Mike Arrington might think it's the best software of its ilk, but I think it smells.

Even as I write this I wonder if I am being a hypocrite.

ur a fukn idiot, if u don't

ur a fukn idiot, if u don't like it don't fukn use it. It's good for donwloading embed music from sites such as Imeem etc, some music are hard to find even using P2P programs, i browse warez forums a lot and i have everything i want cracked, stuff like Limewire Pro 4.17 (newest as of 20th Jan 2008) etc, i get those free but those programs may still contain ads or spywares etc, a simple search on sites like Imeem will give u the music u need, u simply stream and download, it's that simple, it's a great program and i'm surprised it actually downloads files from those sites where as stuff like VideoGet, TubeHunter etc can't, those are tools that can download anything from any website, but it doesn't download from a few specific sites i've tried.

also firefox extensions like Unplug or Videodownloader doesn't download files from Imeem either, this tool does a great job being a freeware so stfu if u don't like it and who the hell cares if it's got the word "Zilla" in it? I was just browsing and read ur crap blog, stop complaining about such an awesome freeware and grow some balls.

The mind of a genius at work in that last post.

First comment, you are being graded in life on your spelling, and what you come back as in your next life depends on what kind of a final grade you get...

Do you think misspelled swear words make your arguement any better? You don't have a valid point, don't try and validate something moot by using your profanity, it shows a certain level of unintelligence don't you think?

Now, onto the product MusicZilla. 'Zilla' seems to be used in a few product names, Mozilla, Filezilla, this product may be trying to steal some thunder off of a product name. It seems to be a common business practise [think of the BlackJack trying to skim off the BlackBerry name.]

I have to agree that these products that RIP streamed media off the internet seem to be a little on the shady side. And when you pirate, you are no better than someone who breaks into another person's house and steals from them. This program seems like it is an aid to do just that. But getting into it, the Sound Recorder included with Windows has made stealing any audio possible since the early days of Windows. So is it really anything new? Not really, it just makes it easier.

I won't personally use this software, but if you have the need to do so, knock yourself out.

the mind of a genius .. take 2

boh .. lolz .. how did that dude pass the skill testing question?
